Electricity Consumption Grows Nearly 47 Per Cent In The First Week Of April 2021

n a positive development for the Indian economy, the Union Ministry of Power’s data shows that the power consumption in the country grew nearly 47 per cent in the first week of April to 28.34 billion units (BU) over the same period a year ago, reports Hindu Businessline.

Hit by the nationwide lockdown, during the same time last year the power consumption in India had come down to 19.33 BU. The lockdown had led to significant demand erosion from the industrial and commercial users, bringing down consumption.

Also, the peak power demand met during the first week of the month was 132.3 gigawatts (GW) in April 2020. The same this year surged to 181.05 GW on bygone 7 April. This is also higher than the 176.81 GW of peak power demand met during the entire month of April in 2019.

It should be noted that the monthly power consumption has been recording a year-on-year growth ever since September last year. March saw the YoY growth at a whopping 23 per cent as power consumption in the month rose to 121.51 BU.
