The cargo handling capacity of 12 major ports increased 800.52 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) in 2013-14 to 1,560.61 MTPA in 2020-21.
Similarly, the country’s annual cargo handling capacity of 200 non-major ports has increased from 599.47 MTPA in 2013-14 to 1,002.24 MTPA in 2020-21.
Thus the total capacity of all the Indian Ports has nearly doubled from 1,399.99 MTPA during 2013-14 to 2,562.85 MTPA in 2020-21.
This information was given by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (30 November).
“As far as major ports are concerned, no new major port was constructed post the year 2014. Capacity augmentation and upgradation at major ports is a continuous process. The non-major ports are under the jurisdiction of respective State Maritime Boards or State Governments,” the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said.
The total operating income earned by major ports under central government control has seen an increase. During 2020-21, the total operating income was Rs 14,688 crore and Rs 9,162 crore during 2013-14.
Also, the total income of major ports has increased from Rs 11,171 crore during 2013-14 to Rs 16,419 crore during 2020-21.
