Chennai Metro’s Monthly Ridership Doubles To 48 Lakh Passengers In May 2022

In the last five months, Chennai metro rail’s monthly ridership has almost doubled to 47.9 lakh passengers in May 2022. The monthly ridership count has increased from 25.19 lakh in January to 47.87 lakh in May.

The increase in ridership numbers is remarkable for January, February and March, in which 25.19 lakh, 31.86 lakh and 44.67 lakh passengers, respectively, have used the Chennai metro rail.

“Chennai Metro has always endeavoured to provide the people of Chennai a safe, efficient and reliable travel partner,” Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said.

Chennai Metro covers 54 km in two corridors, namely Washermenpet to Airport (23 Km), Chennai Central to St.Thomas Mount (21.96 Km) and extension from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar (9 km) in Thiruvottriyur.

Phase II expansion has been planned for a 118.9 Km network with 128 Stations. It consists of three Corridors, i.e. Corridor -3 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km), Corridor -4 from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km), Corridor-5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 Km). The estimated cost of the project is Rs 63,246 crore.
