Centre Inaugurates Four New Jetties In West Bengal, To Develop 60 Jetties Along The Ganga River

The government is constructing 60 jetties along the Ganga river, from Varanasi to Haldia, said Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for Shipping and Waterways.

The Centre inaugurated four jetties on either side of the river in Kalyani and Tribeny, West Bengal on 26 March. It was mentioned that 118 waterways are also being developed across the country.

The Union MoS informed that the four jetties that the Centre inaugurated were built at a cost of Rs 8 crore.

“The 118 new waterways will reduce distance, lower transportation costs and benefit small traders, daily passengers and students. It will strengthen the economy,” Thakur said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focussing on the infrastructure development of the country which has been neglected for a long” he said.

“We want the cooperation of the West Bengal government for infrastructure development as the State needs it,” he added.

He also initiated various development along the Ichamati river – National Waterway 44, in North 24 Parganas district. Work will be done for 24 km from Berigopalpore to Taranipore.
