Chennai Metro Phase-II: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited Wins Rs 1,134 Crore Contract For Construction Of OMR IT Corridor

On Thursday (27 April), the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) signed a contract with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the construction of a 10-kilometre-long elevated line over the OMR IT corridor from Sholinganallur to Siruseri Sipcot.

This contract is part of the Asian Development Bank’s funding for Phase-II of the CMRL project.

RVNL will construct the elevated line and stations, and CMRL will supervise the project.

The scope of the contract is vast, and the project is significant since it is the last elevated corridor tender being awarded for the 118.9 km Phase-II project.

Earlier, on 10 January, CMRL issued a letter of acceptance to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited for an amount of Rs 1,134 crore.

The contract outlines the construction of an elevated viaduct approximately 10 km long and nine elevated metro stations, along with a stabling viaduct at Sipcot.

The nine stations, namely Sholinganallur Lake-1, Sri Ponniamman Temple (Sholinganallur Lake-2), Sathyabama University (Semmenchery-1), Semmenchery-2, Gandhi Nagar, Navalur, Siruseri, Siruseri Sipcot-1, and Siruseri Sipcot-2.

The Sholinganallur to Siruseri Sipcot via the OMR IT corridor line will cater to the growing demand for public transport in the area.

The nine stations will provide connectivity to significant IT hubs such as Sathyabama University, the Sholinganallur IT Park, and Siruseri, which is home to a number of big-name companies such as TCS, Cognizant, and HCL.

Chennai Metro Phase II

The expansion of Metro Phase-II is planned with a network length of 118.9 km with 128 stations. It consists of three corridors, namely Corridor-3 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), Corridor-5 from Madhavaram at Sholinganallur (47 km).
