As part of the new transportation system, a standard payment method based on a new mobile application would be implemented. It would be similar to “Transport for London,” which allows one card to be used on all forms of public transportation in London.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) intends to launch the integrated public transportation system alongside the inauguration of Water Metro services, in the city, in the coming weeks.
KMRL officials will hold discussions with bus operators and auto-rickshaw unions in the city soon.
Kochi is served by all major public transportation options, including private and public buses, railways, Metro rail, cabs, auto rickshaws, and Water Metro(ferries).
However, city planners have noted that, while these forms of transportation are individually extensive and far-reaching, they suffer from a lack of integration and connectedness, resulting in inefficiency.
The new transportation system will connect the city’s Metro trains, Water Metro boat services, buses, and auto rickshaws.
As part of the new transportation system, a standard payment method based on a new mobile application would be implemented. It would be similar to “Transport for London,” which allows one card to be used on all forms of public transportation in London.
KMRL managing director Loknath Behera said, the new transport system allows commuters to pay through a common mobile application and travel in bus, auto rickshaws and metro trains, reports Economic Times.
The new transportation system is expected to increase footfalls in Metro and enhance other public transportation systems.
When Kochi’s first phase of the Metro train was opened in 2017, the demand for a transportation authority that can coordinate various modes of transportation through a single command and control centre increased.
In fact, as part of the National Urban Mobility Policy, the centre required the integration of all public modes of transportation and the implementation of an unified ticketing system for passenger convenience in 2013.
