According to the e-challan statistics, 18 states and Union Territories have collected approximately Rs 1,975 crore in fines raised through e-challans for violations of traffic and transport rules in the past two years.
Uttar Pradesh leads in e-challan collection with Rs 545 crore as fine for traffic violation followed by Bihar with Rs 488 crore during September 2019 to July 2021 period.
According to the e-challan statistics, 18 states and Union Territories have collected approximately Rs 1,975 crore in fines raised through e-challans for violations of traffic and transport rules in the past two years.
The amended Motor Vehicles Act with provision of increased fines for violations came into force in September 2019.
Delhi has collected Rs 244 crore in fines during this period. The data also shows that Haryana and Tamil Nadu collected Rs 165 crore and Rs 140 crore respectively.
Tamil Nadu tops among the states and UTs so far as total number of e-challans are concerned recording 2.37 crore such challans followed by Delhi (2.04 crore).
Prior to 2019, very few states had gone for an e-challan system in a limited manner. The Centre has pushed for electronic recording of violations of motor vehicle rules across states and also aims to make it as the default mode for recording violations and issuing challans.
Sources said the increased fines under the new law has resulted in collection of more penalty amounts, which the states can utilise to improve IT-based enforcement and for road safety activities.
