Infrastructure sector behemoth Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a ‘significant’ contract to build the 3.4-kilometre-long extension of the mainline corridor of the Mauritius metro rail, reports Economic Times.
The project once completed will connect the densely populated areas of Ebene Cybercity and the University of Mauritius via a fully integrated light rail-based urban transit system. The extension would run from Rose Hill Interchange towards Ebene reaching Reduit near the University of Mauritius.
Though the company has not revealed the exact value of the order, the contract falls under ‘significant’ category which ranges between Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 2,000 crore.
The contract won by L&T would involve the construction of three new stations, viaducts & bridges, track works, direct current electric traction systems, ticketing and passenger information systems and integration with road traffic through advanced signalling systems.
The development gains significance as L&T is already building the 26-kilometre-long Mainline corridor which connects the island nation’s Curepipe region to Immigration Square in Port Louis. It has already completed the priority section of 12-kilometres from Rosehill to Victoria station, which is under commercial operations since January 2020.
