The 104-km Peripheral Ring Road seeks to proactively address traffic congestion and manage the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
The Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has issued global tenders for a project consultant who will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the ambitious Mysuru Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project.
The PRR will be 104 km and will circumambulate the Mysuru Outer Ring Road, making areas of the city’s outskirts accessible.
The city’s Outer Ring Road is a 42.5-km-long six-lane ring road that connects the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway, KRS Road, Hunsur Highway, Bogadi Road, H D Kote Road, Nanjangud Road, T Narasipur Road, Bannur Road and Mahadevapura Road.
The PRR will help tackle the problem of congestion in the Outer Ring Road due to high number of vehicles, by connecting the rapidly developing areas beyond the outskirts.
The PRR was initially mentioned in the Mysuru Master Plan 2031 which received administrative nod from the government in January 2016. It seeks to proactively address traffic congestion and manage the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
The PRR will also pave the way for inclusion of about 40 semi-urbanised villages on the outskirts of Mysuru as part of the city corporation.
MUDA Commissioner G T Dinesh Kumar said, “The Government has granted permission to float tenders for DPR preparation. The estimated cost is Rs 1,971 crore, including Rs 1,236 crore for land acquisition and Rs 735 crore for road works.“
Kumar stated that the project intends to lay six main roads and two service roads.
The DPR will have all the information regarding the shape of the PRR, length, width, the areas on which the road will pass, the places where land has to be acquired and the government lands along the route, lighting, drainages and illuminated circles.
The DPR will also provide a detailed picture of underpasses, bridges, road dividers, and bypasses.
According to MUDA estimates, the total area of 824 acres of land for the development of the proposed road. MUDA proposes to acquire 750 m on either side of the PRR for Town Planning Scheme, which is 27,500 acres of total area.
The key challenge for the project will be land acquisition.
The project would be require agricultural lands on Mysuru-Bannur Road, Mosambayanahalli Road, Dyavalapura Road, Mysuru-Ooty Road, Kadakola-Jayapura Road, Mysuru-Manandavadi Road, KHB Private Layout Road, Jnana Ganga Layout, Ballahalli Layout, Huyilalu-Yelwal Road, Nagawala-Yelwal Road and Yelwal-Paschimavahini Road to be acquired.
