The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken delivery of its first metro trainset equipped with driverless technology under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This marks a significant milestone, as it’s the first time DMRC has outsourced a project to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) [1).
The trainset was designed and manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, and is part of the first batch of trains for the expansion phase. These state-of-the-art trains boast Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless technology, enabling safe operation at speeds of up to 95 kmph, with an operational speed of 85 kmph [1).
The new trains will serve three lines of the Delhi Metro, covering 64.67 km, including two extensions and the newly developed Gold Line 10. Valued at 312 million euros, this project encompasses not only network expansion but also 15 years of maintenance, making it a groundbreaking OEM partnership for DMRC [1).
In November 2022, Alstom secured an order for 52 six-car trainsets as part of the Phase 4 expansion efforts. With the first driverless train now operational, this project is being hailed as a key achievement in India’s infrastructure and self-reliance initiatives [1).
Olivier Loison, Alstom’s Managing Director, highlighted the positive impact on Delhi’s urban development. “These trainsets will play a pivotal role in improving citizens’ quality of life and driving city development,” he stated, noting the project reinforces the long-standing Alstom-DMRC partnership
