Gadkari Bats For Alternatives, Stresses On Using Waste Rubber And Plastic In Road Construction

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said the construction cost has to be reduced without compromising on quality.

Addressing the 17th Annual Conference on ‘Road Development in India’ organised by Indian Infrastructure, he said that using different waste materials like waste rubber and plastic in road construction reduces dependence on cement and steel.

As a measure to increase the quality of road construction, the Minister said efforts are on to formulate a policy for rating the contractors and companies for making DPRs.

He said that ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, bio CNG and electric Green hydrogen is the fuel for the future. Gadkari said it is time for the country to create more alternatives and competition for construction materials and vehicular fuels.

Indicating the government’s commitment to encouraging alternatives, he said that plans are underway to formulate a policy for making bitumen from biomass.

The Minister also emphasised road safety and reiterated more efforts are needed from all the stakeholders.
