Maruti Suzuki will soon begin work on its new facility in Sonipat, which could become the carmaker’s largest production base in India with a total installed capacity of about a million units.

The company is currently waiting for certain necessary clearances for new facility at Sonipat and the first assembly line at the unit will be commissioned within three years.

The carmaker will be investing Rs 18,000 crore in the Sonipat facility and it will replace the factory in Gurugram as it is situated close to some residential areas and thus faces traffic congestion related concerns.

As of now, Maruti has three operational assembly lines in Gurugram and Manesar facilities. In total, these units have a production capacity of 1.5 million units.

“Unlike Gurugram and Manesar, there is land available to set up a fourth assembly line at Sonipat,” company chairman R C Bhargava was quoted in a report by the Economic Times.

The Gurugram unit is the first manufacturing facility the company made operational in 1983 and the company rolled out the first model in its line-up – the iconic Maruti 800 from the facility.
