The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has proposed to widen 423 roads in the jurisdiction of 20 local bodies, including Greater Chennai Corporation, Tambaram and Avadi Corporations.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has proposed to widen 423 roads in the jurisdiction of 20 local bodies, including Greater Chennai Corporation, Tambaram and Avadi Corporations.
Invoking its powers conferred under Section 17(2) of the Tamil Nadu Town & Country Planning Act 1971,the city’s nodal urban planning authority notified that it intends to undertake street alignment (widening) for a list of roads within Chennai Metropolitan Area.
Besides roads within limits of Chennai, Avadi and Tambaram corporations, the notified roads fall in Anakaputhur,Pallavaram, Pammal and Poonamallee municipalities.
Roads in town panchayat and panchayat unions in areas like Kattankulathur, Perungalathur, Kunrathur,Mangadu,Thiruninravur, Thiruneermlai, Minjur, Puzhal, Sholavaram, Villivakkam and St. Thomas Road are also included in the widening plan.
The extent of widening ranges from a minimum of as 7.2 m to a maximum of 60 m.
“The street alignment shall be half width of right of way measured on either side of the central line of the road as existing in cases where specific street alignment has not been indicated in the plan. The centre-line of the streets shall be arrived based on the width preceding widening, (if any done) of that part of the road / street. In cases where Railway line abuts on one side, the proposed widening shall be totally on the other side.” the notification said.
“In cases where street alignment are shown on one side or unequally on both sides of an existing road, then it should be left as shown in the plan.” the notification added.
Details regarding the compensation package for people whose land will be acquired for road expansion is not yet known.
The CMDA will display maps marking the proposed street alignments and make it available for inspection in its Egmore office.
“Any person who intends to make any objection/suggestion/representation regarding the Street alignment proposal may do so in writing addressed to the Member Secretary, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority within 21 days from the date of this Notification.” the CMDA notification said.
