In a bid to tackle the city’s water woes, authorities are looking to set up five min-desalination plants in Chennai at the cost of Rs 120 crore, reports The Times of India.
The plants will be established in the areas of Kasimedu, Thiruvottiyur, Triplicane, MRC Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur in the next six months.
“Everyone knows Chennai is facing a water crisis. Since we lack perennial sources, we decided to set up mini-desalination plants that will cater to specific areas. The areas selected under the project are heavily dependent on groundwater sources that have now completely gone dry. Each of these plants can cater to at least 1 lakh people,” a Metrowater senior engineer stated.
The advantage of setting up min-plants is that not a lot of space is required to be allocated, while it is also more easy to get various clearances such as those from the central and state pollution board.
Currently, a feasibility study is being carried out for the plants. Pipelines will also be put in place to connect the said desalination plants with the closest water distribution centres.
