Jewar International Airport: Developer, Zurich International Airport Selects 4-Company Consortium To Design Passenger Terminal

Zurich International Airport has finalised its international consortium to design Jewar International Airport at Noida, the Architects consortium includes Nordic, Grimshaw, STUP and Haptic.

The consortium was selected after conducting a three phase design competition, the other competitors included Gensler-Arup and SOM-Mott McDonalds, the selected consortium has previously designed Hyderabad and New Istanbul airport.

Chairman and Managing Director of Yamuna International Airport private limited (YIAPL). Daniel Bircher said, they are already at work, and key design activities will be concluded by July 2021, and YIAPL will be in position to contract the construction partner to develop airport.

YIAPL is 100 per cent subsidiary of Zurich International Airport, which has been incorporated to develop Jewar International Airport at Noida.

As per the signed concession between Uttar Pradesh Government and Zurich International Airport, the development of Jewar Airport is at estimated cost of 29,560 crore.

Bricher said the design competition was held on six parameters, as follows,

  1. Simplicity and clarity
  2. Context and local culture
  3. Operational efficiency
  4. Comfort and convenience
  5. Short possible walking distances, and
  6. Flexibility and Modularity

YIAPL, CEO Christoph Schnellmann said, “We are pleased to work with consortium, the consortium has created an efficient layout, convincing design language, multiple high quality areas spaces out with lush green spaces with a balanced concept of both, energy saving and tangible sense of sustainability, the consortium has demonstrated proficiency in complementing costumer comfort with sustainability, timeless design and flexibility with future needs, and we will closely work with team to ensure a design with everything available that a passenger expects at a world class airport”.

Speaking on behalf of the winning consortia, Gudmund Stokke, founding partner and head of design at Nordic, said: “We are very happy to have won the confidence of Zurich Airport through our competition design for the new Delhi Noida International Airport. DNIA will become a unique new gateway to the world city of Delhi and to the state of Uttar Pradesh. In this project Nordic, Grimshaw, Haptic and STUP will combine the collective experience and knowledge from the airports in Hyderabad, Oslo, Istanbul, Zurich to create a truly modern, innovative and green airport, based in a region of strong historic and cultural tradition” TOI reported

YIPAL has earlier said the airport will have a capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually after first phase of construction, and has submitted the master plan of first phase in first week of December 2020.

Bricher said, they are interacting with public and are conducting surveys to know public opinion and their expectations, these surveys are conducted via multiple social media platforms, this will let them designers know, what facilities are important to passengers, how do passengers see different aspects of airport and space and other inputs which can help them design better.

Bircher also added, they are looking into making a specific digital product that can give contactless and seamless passage to travellers, company is looking at contactless features such as biometrics, along similar lines if Digi Yatra standards.

Digi Yatra is hassle-free travel initiative by government of India, aims to make paperless and ease travelling, it is based on bio-metrics and digital processing system for entry and related requirements at the airport.

In this regard, the company has conducted at least 30 calls with major players to understand new technologies and models, and company is also firming strategy how it wants to deploy these technologies, he added, financial express reported.
