Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly constructed terminal 2 (T2) of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on November 10.
“I invite all of you to participate in the event to make it a grand success,” chief minister Basavaraj Bommai told party workers while addressing the BJP state executive committee meeting.
The first phase of the T2 will have a built-up area of 255,000 sq.m and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 cores. The second phase will add another 4.41 lakh sq m to T2. When operational, Phase-I is expected to cater to 25 million passengers annually.
In Oct 2018, Bengaluru International Airport (BIAL) awarded Rs 3000 crores contract to L&T’s Buildings & Factories business for construction of the T2 . The contract includes design, procurement, engineering, construction, testing and operations of Terminal 2.
American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) was selected for providing the design of the terminal.
Garden Terminal
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill chose a design for the terminal to reflect the ethos of Bengaluru as a garden city.
Billed as the garden terminal, it feature trees, small gardens and ponds with local species of plants.
Passageways throughout the terminal will connect the passengers with nature. The ceiling at the entrance, check-in and security area will feature hanging planted bells. The new terminal will also feature a large indoor garden with rammed-earth walls and waterfalls, which will act as a gateway into the densely-landscaped retail area.
The three-storeyed forest belt is set to offer an unique outdoor experience for arriving and departing passengers. It will be well connected to the shopping area. The forest belt will be viewable from all main indoor spaces.
An expansive outdoor garden is being built under the project will be arranged around a lagoon to serve as a nursery for the maintenance of plants, with connection to Terminal 1 and the airport hotel through elevated walkways.
Among other things, T2 will offer include a multi-level car parking area and a lagoon for water recycling, apart from a multi-modal transport hub aligned to the main entrance, to which a metro station built by Namma Metro will offer connectivity to and from Bengaluru city.
Godrej & Boyce was recently awarded a contract worth Rs 107 crore for constructing a Multi-Model Transportation Hub (MMTH) that is being developed as part of the airport expansion project. The MMTH will be located between Terminal 1 (T1) and T 2 of the Bengaluru airport and will cover roughly nine lakh square feet.
A fully covered 420m walkway connecting P4 parking zone and T1 is also being constructed
Bommai said Modi will also inaugurate the 108ft-tall statue of chieftain Nadaprabhu Kempegowda (widely credited as founder of Bengaluru city) and the garden-theme park surrounding it
The statue is on a 23-acre space at the airport, which will be a heritage park dedicated to showcasing Kempegowda. It was constructed at a cost of about Rs 85 crore.
The statue is designed by famous Noida-based sculptor Ram Vanji Suttar, who is a Padma Bhushan awardee. Suttar is also known for designing the Statue of Unity depicting late statesman Vallabbhai Patel in Gujarat, as well as the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Vidhan Soudha in Bengaluru.
