Keeping the increased footfalls of tourists at the holy town of Puri in mind, the Railways has undertaken a massive redevelopment initiative for Puri station at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 162 crore.
Keeping the possible heavy storm condition due to nearby sea beach, a pre-stressed concrete platform shelter would be built as a 250 kmph wind resistant structure. The wind resistant platform would provide shelter during the cyclone.
With a renovation of a circulating area of 22,153 sq m, the redevelopment plan envisages a centralised air conditioned station building, large concourse, provision of escalator and lift and a paid lounge among other improved amenities at the rail premise.
There will be food plaza and shops, a baby feed room, modern retiring rooms, children play area and other recreational facilities as part of the redevelopment plan.
According to a senior East Coast Railway official, “Puri is attracting a large number of pilgrims to Lord Jagannath temple. Besides, the beach of Puri is also an attraction spot for tourists. So there is a need for the station to redevelop as a world class rail premise.
Attention has been paid to ensure a smooth traffic flow and adequate parking facilities for passengers.
The redeveloped station will also have a place for meditation, Yoga and library facilities.
It would be a green building with an efficient energy management system with renovation of all platforms with modern ceiling, lights and signage.
The station will have electrical car charging points at Parking Bay, effluent treatment plant and energy management as green initiatives of the redevelopment plan.
The project is expected to complete in January 2025.
