India-Bangladesh Railway Link via Agartala Set To Be Operational By 2023 End, Rail Ministry Allocates Rs 153.84 crore

The 15-km rail link connecting Agartala in Tripura with Gangasagar in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh is set to be completed in the next few months.

The Rs 862.58 crore Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) railway project is expected to be operational by the end of this year or early next year.  Once operational, it will reduce the travel time between Agartala and Kolkata, via Dhaka to 10 hours from 31 hours,

Of the 15 km link, 33.52 per cent (5.05 km) is in India and the remaining 10.014 km is in Bangladesh. The project includes one major bridge and three minor bridges.

The Railway Ministry has allocated the final trance of Rs 153.84 crores for the under-construction railway line.The project is being funded by the Ministry of DONER (Development of North Eastern Region) and  about Rs 708.74 crores has been spent on the project.

The railway line will link Akhaura Junction railway station in Bangladesh with Agartala through an international immigration station at Nischintapur (that falls on the India-Bangladesh border), which will be a dual gauge station for both passenger and goods interchange.
