The construction of the elevated structure, spanning 27 km, will be completed in 3.6 years, while the underground structure, covering 5 km, will take 4.6 years.
On Wednesday (28 June), Chennai Metro Rail Managing Director MA Siddique announced that the Madurai Metro Rail Project, which will connect Tirumangalam with Othakadai, will consist of 27 metro stations.
There will be one station for every kilometre on the elevated structure and one station for every 1.5 km in the underground structure.
Following a meeting with officials from various departments regarding the project, MA Siddique addressed the media at the Madurai Collectorate. He stated that the detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared soon and submitted to the government on 15 July for both the Madurai and Coimbatore metro projects.
MA Siddique revealed that out of the proposed 27 metro stations in Madurai, three stations will be located underground. The underground stations will be near the Madurai railway junction/Periyar bus stand, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, and Goripalayam.
The station near the temple is likely to be situated under North Masi street or North Avani Moola Street, with these options currently being explored.
MA Siddique stated that the proposed metro line and station near the temple will not have any adverse impact on the heritage buildings or temple car processions. Once the DPR is submitted to the government, approval is obtained from the Centre, and funds are allocated, the project will commence.
