Mumbai Metro: Car Depot Issue At Thane’s Mogharpada For Lines 4 And 4A Likely To Be Resolved Soon

The 32.32-km-long Metro Line-4 will be starting from Kasarvadavali, near Thane in the north, to Wadala, south Mumbai — providing an alternate public transport connectivity for Thane city with Mumbai.

A proposal to secure land for a car depot at Mogharpada in Thane for Metro Lines 4 and 4A, which connect Central Mumbai with Thane, will be presented to the Cabinet within a week.

This update is crucial because the operationalisation of Mumbai Metro-4 (Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali) and 4A (Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh) depends on the establishment of the car shed.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 905.77 crore.

The total length of both metro lines is 35.20 km, with Metro-4 covering 32.32 km and Metro-4A encompassing 2.88 km.

The Metro Line-4 is part of the Green Line and will be 32.32 km long starting from Kasarvadavali, near Thane in the north, to Wadala, south Mumbai — providing an alternate public transport connectivity for Thane city with Mumbai.

The car shed facility will require 35 hectares of land to accommodate stabling lines, a control center, washing area, and maintenance yard.

The project is gaining momentum towards completion as a consensus has been reached between the state government, locals of Mogharpada, and the project.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the state government have adopted the City and Industrial Development Corporation’s land acquisition model, which involves returning a portion of the developed land to the inhabitants.

The compensation plan for the people of Mogharpada has been divided into two groups: landowners and others.

Landowners will receive 22.5 per cent compensation, while others will be eligible for 12.5 per cent, according to Free Press Journal report.

In November 2022, MMRDA initiated a bidding process to find infrastructure firms for the construction of a car depot. The revised plans for the depot reduced its size to 35 hectares, from the originally proposed 41 hectares.

The depot will include 16 stabling lines for 32 six-car trains and five inspection bay lines. The joint venture of SEW Infrastructure and Vishwa Samudra Engineering emerged as the lowest bidders, quoting Rs 905.77 crore for the creation of the car depot.

Initially, MMRDA planned to build the largest car depot at this location. However, due to challenges in land acquisition, the plans for the depot were revised.
