Indian Railways: Freight And Passenger Segments See Significant Rise In Earnings

Continuing with the growth trajectory, the freight loading of Indian Railways for the first nine months of this financial year 2022-23 crossed last year’s loading and earnings for the same period.

Besides, the revenue earnings touched Rs 48,913 crore in the passenger segment, registering an increase by 71 per cent during April to December 2022 in comparison to Rs 28,569 crore achieved during the same period last year.

On a cumulative basis from April-December 2022, freight loading of 1109.38 million tonnes (MT) achieved against last year’s loading of 1,029.96 MT, an improvement of 8 per cent over last year’s loading.

The railways has earned Rs 120,478 crore against Rs 104,040 crore over last year which is an improvement of 16 per cent as compared to the same period of last year.

On a mission mode, freight loading of 130.66 MT has been achieved in December 2022 as against the loading of 126.8 MT in December 2021, an increase of 3 per cent over the last year.

Freight revenue of Rs 14,573 crore has been achieved against Rs 12,914 crore freight earnings in December 2021, thereby a growth of 13 per cent over last year.

Following the ‘hungry For cargo’ mantra, the national transporter has made sustained efforts to improve the ease of doing business as well as improve the service delivery at competitive prices which has resulted in new traffic coming to railways from both conventional and non-conventional commodity streams.

In passenger segment, the total earnings during April to December 2022 is Rs 48,913 crore registering an increase of 71 per cent in comparison to Rs 28,569 crore achieved during the same period last year.

In the reserved passenger segment, the total numbers of passengers booked during the period 1 April to 31 December 2022 is Rs 59.61 crore as compared to Rs 56.05 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6 per cent.

The revenue generated from the reserved passenger segment during April to December 2022 is Rs 38,483 crore as compared to Rs 26,400 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 46 per cent.

In the unreserved passenger segment, the total number of passengers booked during the period April- December 2022 is 40,197 lakh as compared to 16,968 lakh during the same period last year, showing an increase of 137 per cent.

The revenue generated from the unreserved passenger segment during the April to December 2022 is Rs 10,430 crore as compared to Rs 2,169 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 381 per cent.
