CMRL intends to widen the Adyar flyover to four lanes after completing the construction of an underground station in this area within four years.
Two flyovers at Adyar and Royapettah High Road-Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai junctions will be partially demolished to allow for the construction of underground stations under the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd Phase II project.
According to CMRL officials, the underground station in these two locations could not be built without demolishing portions of the structures of these two flyovers.
Following a site inspection and discussions with Greater Chennai Corporation and State government officials, the design was finalised.
Both the Adyar and Dr Radhakrishnan Salai Metro Rail stations are part of the 45.8-kilometre Madhavaram-Siruseri line, which is part of Phase 2’s Corridor 3.
The expansion of Metro Phase II is planned with a network length of 118.9 km with 128 stations. It consists of three corridors, namely Corridor -3 – From Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor – 4 – From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), Corridor – 5 – From Madhavaram at Sholinganallur (47 km).
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 63,246 crore. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
After completing the construction of an underground station in this area in four years, CMRL intends to widen the Adyar flyover to four lanes.
“At present, the shaft work has begun at Adyar junction. Once the station box is half completed, we will begin to build a two-lane arm (near Fortis Malar Hospital adjacent to the existing arm of the flyover),” said an official, reports The Hindu.
The officials confirmed that the Royapettah High Road-Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai intersection will require the demolition of half of the flyover and the restriction of vehicular traffic for almost three years.
The section (from the office of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to Royapettah) will be demolished and rebuilt once the station is built, they added.
