The proposed Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar could be completed six months ahead of schedule, according to Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer (CEO) of Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL).

“Construction on the first phase is well underway, and we are six months ahead of schedule,” said Arun Vir Singh.

The NIAL, the authority on the joint venture project, consists of the Uttar Pradesh government, the Noida Industrial Development Authority, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority as stakeholders.

“The new airport’s trials will begin in February or March 2024. Before beginning flying operations, take-off and landing trials must be completed for at least six months in accordance with DGCA (Directorate-General of Civil Aviation) regulations,” Singh added, reports Business Standard.

Authorities have begun acquiring land for Phase II of the second airport in the national capital region in the meantime. Phase II of the airport project requires a total of 1,365 hectares.

72 per cent of farmers gave their consent for the district administration to purchase land for Phase 2 of the airport.

A minimum of 70 per cent of the owners must agree to an acquisition, according to The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013 provisions.

The work on the country’s biggest airport will be completed in four phases. As per the concession agreement, the first phase for 12 million passengers per annum is to be completed and made operational within 1095 days, i.e., 29 September 2024, starting from the appointed date of 01 October 2021.

The Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) has selected Tata Projects Ltd. to undertake the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of Noida International Airport.

The construction work on the site started only in June 2022 after the selection of the EPC agency. If the construction work is not completed within the stipulated period, a fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed on the agency per day.

The Noida International Greenfield Airport Project

Noida International Airport (NIA) is the upcoming greenfield airport at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh which will enhance domestic as well as international connectivity to and from Delhi NCR, Noida and Western UP.

The project spread across an area of 5,000 acres, is being developed by Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA) at an estimated cost of Rs 29,560 crore.

In November last year, the Swiss Airport company won the contract to build and operate the airport.

Following this, the Government of Uttar Pradesh signed the concession agreement with YIAPL to develop Noida International Airport.

YIAPL is a 100 per cent subsidiary of ZAIA, which has been incorporated as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to develop the greenfield airport.

Salient Features Of NIA

  • Two Terminal Complex: The airport will house two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 will have a capacity of 30 million passengers per year and Terminal 2 will have a capacity of 40 million passengers per year.

The terminals will be interconnected to facilitate the transfer of passengers, minimize walking distances and reduce environmental impact. The Inter-terminal connector is important to ensure flexibility for airlines and their operations.

  • Delivering the best connecting time: NIA is introducing a swing-aircraft stand concept, providing flexibility for airlines to operate an aircraft for both domestic and international flights from the same contact stand, without having to re-position the aircraft.

This will ensure quick and efficient aircraft turnarounds at the airport, while ensuring a smooth and seamless passenger transfer process – delivering the best connecting time.

  • Cargo & Logistics Development: NIA has the potential to become a key air cargo gateway for North India. The airport will develop an ecosystem that consists of state-of-the-art infrastructure and product offerings supported by best-in-class procedures.
  • Multi-modal Connectivity: The NIA master-plan includes provisions for integrated and seamless road, rail, bus, and metro connectivity. Some key strategic connectivity points comprise the metro extension from Noida to NIA as well as an airport station for the planned High-Speed Rail Link from Delhi to Varanasi. Yamuna Expressway will also connect NIA to the NCR region and Agra.
  • Ground Transportation Center (GTC): NIA will develop a multi-modal transit hub at the Ground Transportation Center to provide seamless connectivity between various public and private modes of transport.

The GTC will house metro and high-speed rail stations, taxis, bus services and private parking along with a large concourse area housing commercial spaces, restaurants, and lounges.
