In a major development that has a potential to further transform the districts around Hyderabad, Modi government has given in principle approval to build the 340 km Regional Ring Road (RRR) about 30-50 km away from the existing Outer Ring Road (ORR), reports The Hindu.
The Regional Ring Road which connects almost 20 rapidly developing towns around the state capital is estimated to cost Rs 17,000 crore.
The RRR project will be taken up in two parts. The northern part of 158 km connecting the towns of Sangareddy, Narasapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Yadadri, Pragnapur, Bhongir and Choutuppal will be constructed with Rs 7,561 crore. This upcoming road was already notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways as ‘National Highway 161 AA’.
“We have met Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and sought his help to approve the 182 km second part of the RRR covering the southern part connecting Choutuppal, Ibrahimpatnam, Kandukur, Amangal, Chevella, Shankarpally and Sangareddy. He has immediately given his consent for the project expected to cost Rs 4,322 crore and Rs 1,748 crore for land acquisition,” Union Minister of State (Home Affairs) Kishan Reddy said at a press conference in New Delhi.
“It will be a game changer project for Telangana as the RRR will cover 40% of the population and link 20 towns with the national highways. I request the government to expedite the land acquisition,” he added.
Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana, already has a 158 km long and eight lane Outer Ring Road. While it was conceptualized in 2001, the entire project was completed in 2016 after many delays.
