BEML Secures Historic Contract: Largest Rolling Stock Order For Bengaluru Metro Phase II Worth Rs 3,177 crore

BEML has been awarded a contract worth Rs 3,177 crore to supply rolling stock (coaches) for the Phase-2, Phase 2A, and Phase-2B corridors of Bengaluru Metro.

BEML Limited, formerly known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is a “Schedule A” Company under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and manufactures mining equipment, train coaches, and spare parts for industries such as defence, rail, electricity, and infrastructure.

BEML Limited is a significant manufacturer of domestic metro rolling stock in India.

According to B L Yashwanth Chavan, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), the letter of acceptance for the supply and maintenance of 318 coaches was exchanged between BEML and BMRCL on Monday (7 August).

The delivery of coaches will commence in June 2025 and will be completed by the end of 2026.

Chavan mentioned that an average of two or three trains, each consisting of six coaches, will be supplied per month.

The allocation of coaches will be as follows: Phase-2 and 2A will each use 96 coaches, while Phase-2B will be provided with 126 coaches.

These coaches will be utilised for the 72-km network of Phase-2, including extensions of the Purple and Green Lines, as well as the new line from RV Road to Bommasandra.

Chavan stated that the cost per car will be Rs 7.74 crore, with a maintenance cost of Rs 0.13 crore per car per year.

This order represents the largest rolling stock acquisition by BMRCL, with a comprehensive maintenance period of 15 years, according to The New Indian Express report.

Chavan also mentioned that all the trains will be equipped with the Communication Based Train Control system. The coach procurement program is being funded by the Japan International Co-operation Agency.
