More Than 60% Border Roads Constructed In The Past 3 Years Are Along The China Border


According to information presented in the Parliament by the Ministry of Defence, of all the roads Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed in the past three years, more than 60% of them are on the states bordering China.

In terms of specific regions, Arunachal Pradesh witnessed the construction of the highest length of roads at 507.14 km, followed by Ladakh at 453.59 km and Uttarakhand at 343.56 km.

Sikkim saw the building of 164.95 km of roads, while Himachal Pradesh had 40.23 km of border roads constructed.

The construction of roads along the Pakistan borders was also undertaken in the last three years.

Jammu & Kashmir saw the construction of 443.94 km of roads, while Rajasthan had 311.14 km of border roads built.

Overall, the Border Roads Organisation constructed a total of 2445.54 km of roads in the last three years, according to the official data.

There has been significant development in the construction of border infrastructure since 2020, when India and China were involved in a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

This development includes the construction of roads, bridges, habitats for troops, tunnels, and helipads along the border areas. These efforts aim to facilitate faster troop movement and provide support for the population residing in these regions.

According to the data, the BRO has spent Rs 846.46 crore out of the sanctioned Rs 923 crore in the fiscal year 2022-23 for the maintenance of border roads.

This amount is an increase from the Rs 744.52 crore spent in the previous fiscal year.

In a written reply in the Parliament, Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt mentioned that the BRO has received increased availability of air effort and an increase in administrative and financial powers for various BRO executives.

Additionally, the organization has procured modern equipment and construction plants to aid in road construction.

As stated in the written reply, the BRO constructs roads in border areas based on priorities set by the Armed Forces. Their efforts are focused on meeting the infrastructure needs of these regions.
