Of the 1,675 flats being built, 1,093 are those where the slum dwellers of Jailorwala Bagh will be rehabilitated and the remaining 582 will be allotted to beneficiaries from other locations.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has conducted a draw for 1,093 households to rehabilitate Jailorwala Bagh’s slum dwellers in Ashok Vihar, as part of its “Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makaan” (In Situ Slum Rehabilitation) project.

The DDA has undertaken in-situ slum rehabilitation in 376 Jhuggi Jhopri clusters in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to provide ‘Housing for All’.

The objective of the rehabilitation project is to provide a better and healthy living environment, with proper civic amenities and infrastructure, to the economically weaker sections (EWS) and residents of slums in the city.

The government aims to finish constructing these 1,675 EWS flats by July, 2023, reports The Hindu.

Access To Improved Housing Infrastructure

The rehabilitation project with an estimated cost of Rs 421.81 crore will provide housing units of 400-square-feet sizes — containing two rooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a toilet, and balcony.

Built over 14 floors, these modern flats for slum dwellers are made of complete RCC structure and are earthquake-resistant.

“The construction of the flats has been done using the latest MIVAN technology where all components of the buildings are made of concrete. Every tower is equipped with lift and an open recreational space on the eighth floor,” said a DDA spokesperson, as per a Hindustan Times report.

Earlier this month, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, reviewed the progress of work on in situ rehabilitation project at Jailorwala Bagh.

During the onsite inspection of works undertaken till now, the L-G was informed that about 95 per cent works on the total 1,675 flats meant for rehabilitation, has been completed.

Of the 1,675 flats being built, 1,093 are those where the slum dwellers of Jailorwala Bagh will be rehabilitated and the remaining 582 will be allotted to beneficiaries from other locations.

The eligible families will pay Rs 171,000, comprising of Rs 141,000 as a flat beneficiary contribution and a maintenance charge of Rs 30,000 for five years, following a subsidy of approximately Rs 24 lakh per flat.

These residential flats come equipped with various amenities — including community halls, shops, Anganwadi classrooms, a clinic, and a daycare centre.

The project site also provides basement parking that spans over an area of 11,024 square meters, along with surface parking.

Additionally, there is 9,257.7 sq. m. of green space and a sewage treatment plant (STP) available within the premises.

This is DDA’s second in-situ rehabilitation project — following the inauguration of 3,024 new EWS flats in Kalkaji for slum dwellers of Bhoomiheen Camp — by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022.

These flats have been constructed at a cost of about Rs 345 crore and are equipped with all civic amenities and social infrastructure, electric sub-stations, dual water pipelines, lifts, STPs and underground reservoir for hygienic water supply.
